Each pillar is made up of a Heavenly Stem and an Earthly Branch, combining to create a total of eight characters. The Heavenly Stems are associated with the Five Elements—Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water—while the Earthly Branches correspond to animal signs from the Chinese zodiac.

Earthly Branches represent our core, inner personality, slightly hidden from the public, while Heavenly Stems represent our external persona, character traits that others notice at first.
